Detroit Lions after the bye week

The Lions just brought in Bobby Carpenter to add depth at linebacker

The Detroit Lions have made some very interesting moves during their bye week, but they also seem a little bit desperate. GM Martin Mayhew has been very good at bringing players in that were once good in a system; if the team has switched playing styles or the player was traded, he brought them in.

A great example over the offseason was bringing in Corey Williams, who was a stud in Green Bay but got traded to Cleveland and struggled because they ran a 3-4. Now back in his old 4-3 system, he is playing like a Pro Bowler.

Now to my point: Martin Mayhew brought in LB Bobby Carpenter-- maybe it's a very desperate move, but maybe he can show up just like he was supposed to when he was drafted in the first round (Mike Williams anybody?). He also brought in Brandon McDonald from the Cardinals and the Browns, and maybe just maybe he can add some much-needed depth and maybe add a spark on defense; after all he does have 27 career starts since being drafted in 2007.

The question now is whether or not the Lions, since they are supposedly healthy and have an ucoming schedule that appears to be favorable, look like a contender like they say they do, or is it the same ol' Lions?

I think they very well could go 5-5 in the remaining of the games, but we will see. They always seem to come up a little short.

  1. Nice article JohnnyP, I gotta agree with you here: I'm cautiously optimistic about what Carpenter can do. He was so dominant at Ohio State, you can't think he's really as bad at the NFL level as he's been portrayed.

  2. He cannot be any worse than Zack Follett

  3. I think you, I or Jim Schwartz himself could play just as productively at linebacker as any body they've had in the middle all season!

  4. I think you guys are all caught up in the past. Sure the lions have set marks for the worst record. Sure opposing quaterbacks, running backs and recievers have had record setting days against the lions. In the past. But this is now. The lions have been in most of the games till the end this season, when unfortunately the referees got involved or a bad bounce doomed them once again. But that is all in the past. The lions are back and will make your heart soar with glee the rest of the season. Bring on the roar

  5. If by the past you mean the past few weeks, then yes we are. They've been in games until they played poorly down the stretch...and lost. Bout time for a revolution in the D.

  7. Lions offense is not balanced enough to beat good teams. They need improvement on the offensive line and a running back that can break a tackle. Don't get me wrong, i think best is good. However, i think we need a rb that can run more effectively inside the tackles. Good article JohnnyP.
